HEY YOU HTTP SCRUB

Stop it. Get some help. HTTP and HTML and CSS are so, so flawed. Why?

• CSS is complicated. I still haven't figured out how to vertically center things.
• Tracking scripts. Do you like those? I don't.
• 40 MB of Javascript and counting
• Links that don't look like links.
• Too much focus on fluffly things like images and presentation.
• Have you tried writing a web browser? Microsoft switched Edge to the Chromium engine because HTTP is just too complicated for mortals to understand anymore.
• So many wasted bytes, and on what? Hero images? Polyfills?
• So much wasted CPU power, and on what? Parallax scrolling? Slightly faster content loading?
• I can't read a Medium article on my Amstrad CPC.

We can do better. As a society. As humanity. Let's throw out the tracking scripts, the encryption, the interactive content and the mess that is CSS and whatever Javascript even is anymore with it's browserifys and it's nodes.

Gopher is great! It's got text! A surprisingly decent community! A dead-simple protocol! You could write your own gopher server in a day with the languge of your choice, if you wanted to. A gopher client's just as easy. Take the web back from Google and Amazon. ＪＯＩＮ ＴＨＥ ＧＯＰＨＥＲＳＰＡＣＥ.
